On a trip, nobody pays for everything and nobody pays for nothing. One person books the cabin, another rents the car, a third buys the groceries, and by the last day nobody is sure who owes whom. The travel expense splitter above gives you each person’s fair share of the total in a few seconds.

The worked example below then takes the next step that most trip calculators skip: turning everyone’s fair share into a short list of payments that settles the trip.

How to use the travel expense splitter

  1. Add up every shared cost of the trip and type it as the Bill total.
  2. Set Number of people to the number of travellers.
  3. Leave the tip on No tip.
  4. Read Each person pays. This is everyone’s fair share of the trip.
  5. Tap Share result to send it to the group, then work out the payments as shown below.

Worked example: four friends, a long weekend

Lena, Omar, Kai and Ruth spend three nights in a cabin. Each of them paid for something.

Cost Paid by Amount
Cabin, 3 nights Lena $840.00
Car rental and fuel Omar $268.00
Groceries Kai $193.40
Dinner out Ruth $214.60
Total $1,516.00

Enter $1,516.00 and 4 people: each fair share is $1,516.00 ÷ 4 = $379.00. Now compare what each person paid with that share.

Person Paid Fair share Balance
Lena $840.00 $379.00 gets back $461.00
Omar $268.00 $379.00 owes $111.00
Kai $193.40 $379.00 owes $185.60
Ruth $214.60 $379.00 owes $164.40

The balances cancel out: $111.00 + $185.60 + $164.40 = $461.00. So three payments settle the whole trip: Omar pays Lena $111.00, Kai pays Lena $185.60 and Ruth pays Lena $164.40. A group of four never needs more than three payments.

How the rounding works. If the total had been $1,517.30, the exact share would be $379.325. The calculator works in cents: 151,730 ÷ 4 is 37,932 cents with 2 cents left over, so two people pay $379.33 and two pay $379.32, which adds up to $1,517.30.

What to split evenly, and what not to

Splitting the whole trip evenly is simple and fine when everyone did everything together. When they did not, decide each kind of cost before you go.

Cost Fair way to split it
Accommodation, everyone in their own room Evenly per person
Accommodation, a couple sharing a room Per room, so the couple shares one room’s cost
Car rental, fuel, parking Only the people who rode in that car
Groceries and shared meals Evenly, unless someone was away for days
Activities and tours Only the people who took part
Drinks Evenly if everyone drank, otherwise only the drinkers

Per person or per room? The $840 cabin has three bedrooms, and Lena and Omar are a couple sharing one. Per person it is $840 ÷ 4 = $210 each. Per room it is $840 ÷ 3 = $280 a room, so Lena and Omar pay $140 each and Kai and Ruth pay $280 each. Check: $140 + $140 + $280 + $280 = $840. Per room is usually fairer here, since Kai and Ruth each have a whole room to themselves.

When a calculator is not enough

A real trip has more than four costs, and some of them do not involve everyone. Half Tab was made for this. Create a group for the trip, add each cost as it happens with who paid it, leave out anyone who skipped the boat tour, and split costs equally, by exact amounts, by shares or by percentage. A shared kitty works too: record that everyone chipped in. At the end, Half Tab shows the fewest payments that settle everyone up, like the three above. It works offline, which helps when the cabin has no signal, and it runs on iPhone and iPad in 21 languages.

Split bill calculator questions

How do you split trip costs when different people paid?

Add up everything everyone paid and divide by the number of people to get each person's fair share. Then compare what each person paid with their share. People who paid more get money back, people who paid less pay the difference. The worked example on this page shows it step by step.

How do you split accommodation when a couple shares a room?

Either split per person, so the couple pays two shares, or split per room, so the couple pays one room between them. Per room is usually fairer when everyone has their own room except the couple. In a $840 cabin with three bedrooms, per room means $280 a room, so the couple pays $140 each and the others $280.

What if someone skips an activity or a meal?

Split that cost only between the people who took part. The calculator above splits one total at a time, so run it separately for that cost. The Half Tab app lets you leave people out of any expense and keeps the totals for you.

How do you split travel costs in different currencies?

Pick one currency for the trip and convert every cost into it at the rate you actually paid, for example from your card statement. The calculator does not convert currencies. In the Half Tab app, each group has one currency, chosen when you create it.

When should the group settle up?

Settle at the end of the trip, while everyone still remembers the costs. On a long trip, settling once a week keeps the amounts smaller. Agree beforehand how people will pay each other back.
