The plates are cleared, the check lands in the middle of the table, and four people reach for their phones at once. The restaurant bill splitter above turns the total, the tip and the number of people into one clear amount per person, and it tells you who pays the extra cent so the shares add up to exactly what the restaurant charged.

It runs in your browser, needs no sign up and stores nothing. If your group ordered very differently, read the section on fairness below before you split evenly.

How to use the restaurant bill splitter

  1. Keep Split evenly selected.
  2. Type the Bill total from the check, including tax.
  3. Set Number of people with the minus and plus buttons.
  4. Pick a tip: No tip, 10%, 15%, 18% or 20%, or type your own in Other %.
  5. Read Each person pays, the Tip and the Total with tip.
  6. Tap Share result to copy or send the split to the group chat.

Worked example: four friends, one check

Ana, Ben, Chloe and Dev share dinner. The check shows a $116.00 subtotal and $9.28 sales tax (8%), so the bill total is $125.28. They tip 15% on the total.

Step Arithmetic Result
Tip $125.28 × 15% = $18.792 $18.79
Total with tip $125.28 + $18.79 $144.07
Exact share $144.07 ÷ 4 $36.0175
Rounded shares 3 × $36.02 + 1 × $36.01 $144.07

How the rounding works. Nobody can pay a quarter of a cent. The calculator rounds the tip to the nearest cent, works in whole cents, and hands out the cents left over one at a time. Here 14,407 cents divided by 4 is 3,601 cents each with 3 cents left, so three people pay $36.02 and one pays $36.01. The note under the result says exactly that, so the restaurant gets $144.07, not $144.08 or $144.04.

Splitting fairly: which method fits your table

An even split is fair when everyone ate and drank about the same. When they did not, a few minutes of care saves a lot of quiet resentment.

Situation at the table Fairest way to split
Shared plates, set menu, similar orders Split evenly, as above
Some people drank, some did not Split food evenly, drinks only between drinkers
One person ordered far more Split by item (Half Tab app or our guide)
Service charge already on the check Choose No tip, split the total
Someone’s birthday, the group treats them Count only the people paying

Subtotal or total? The tip above is 15% of the total with tax. If your group tips on the subtotal, 15% of $116.00 is $17.40, so the total is $142.68 and each person pays $35.67. That is 35 cents a person less. Work out the tip on the subtotal yourself, add it to the bill total, choose No tip, and split that.

When some people did not drink. Say $28.00 of the $125.28 was a bottle of wine that only Ana and Ben shared. Run the calculator twice:

Part of the bill Amount with 15% tip Split between Each
Food and tax: $97.28 $97.28 + $14.59 = $111.87 4 people $27.97 (three) and $27.96 (one)
Wine: $28.00 $28.00 + $4.20 = $32.20 2 people $16.10

Ana and Ben pay $27.97 + $16.10 = $44.07 each, Chloe pays $27.97 and Dev pays $27.96. Together: $88.14 + $27.97 + $27.96 = $144.07, the same total as before, just shared more fairly.

Tips that keep the evening friendly

  • Agree on the method before you order, not when the check arrives.
  • One person pays, the rest pay them back. Restaurants are faster with one card, and the person who pays can collect card points.
  • Check for a service charge before adding a tip, especially on group bookings.
  • Round up only if everyone agrees. Paying $37 each instead of $36.02 leaves $3.93 extra, which is a bigger tip, not a rounding error.

When a calculator is not enough

One check is easy. A week of meals on a trip, a regular lunch club, or a dinner where three different people paid for different rounds is where people lose track. Half Tab keeps every bill in a group, splits each one equally, by exact amounts, by shares or by percentage, lets you leave out anyone who was not at a meal, and records who paid. At the end it shows the fewest payments that settle everyone up. It works offline on iPhone and iPad, and nobody needs an account to start.

Split bill calculator questions

How do you split the check with tip?

Add the tip to the bill total, then divide by the number of people. A $125.28 bill with a 15% tip is $125.28 plus $18.79, so $144.07. Split four ways that is $36.02 for three people and $36.01 for one, which adds up to exactly $144.07.

Should we tip on the subtotal or on the total with tax?

Both are common in the United States. Tipping on the subtotal before tax is the traditional rule, tipping on the total is a little more generous. On a $116 meal with $9.28 tax, 15% on the subtotal is $17.40 and 15% on the total is $18.79. Agree on one before the bill arrives.

How do you split a bill when someone did not drink?

Run the calculator twice. Split the food, tax and tip between everyone, then split the drinks and their tip only between the people who drank. Add the two amounts for each drinker. The worked example on this page shows it with real numbers.

What if the bill already has a service charge?

Choose No tip in the calculator and split the total as it is. A service charge or automatic gratuity, often added for larger tables, is already the tip. Adding a percentage on top means tipping twice.

Can this calculator split by what each person ordered?

Not directly. It splits one total evenly. For a few items you can run it once per group of items. For item by item splits with exact amounts, use the Half Tab app or follow our guide to splitting a restaurant bill.
